Rekha Gupta has been announced as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, making history as the city’s fourth woman CM. A seasoned politician with deep roots in the BJP and a background in student politics, Gupta’s rise marks a significant shift in Delhi’s political landscape.
Political Journey and Experience
Born in Haryana’s Jind district, Gupta moved to Delhi as a child. She began her political career in the 1990s as part of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and later served as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). Her association with the BJP started in 2002, leading to key roles in the party’s youth and women’s wings.
Gupta has served three terms as an MCD councillor, holding positions such as Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Committee and Chairperson of the Women’s Welfare Committee. She also played a significant role in education governance as NDMC’s Education Secretary.
Electoral Battles and Victory
Gupta contested the Delhi Assembly elections twice (2015 and 2020) but lost to AAP’s Bandana Kumari. However, in 2024, she secured a decisive victory from Shalimar Bagh, winning by a margin of 29,595 votes.
Her political journey, marked by resilience and grassroots connections, has earned her the trust of BJP leadership. She was also the party’s mayoral candidate in the 2023 MCD elections but lost to AAP’s Shelly Oberoi.
Challenges Ahead
As Delhi’s new CM, Gupta faces multiple challenges, including governance issues, the ongoing tussle between the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor, and tackling civic problems like pollution, water supply, and infrastructure.
With her administrative experience and strong backing from the BJP, Rekha Gupta is set to lead Delhi into a new political phase, aiming to address long-standing issues and strengthen the party’s hold in the capital.
