India and Myanmar have engaged in discussions to resume border trade through roads, recognizing its significance in boosting economic cooperation. The matter was deliberated upon during a meeting between Myanmar’s Deputy Commerce Minister U. Minn Minn and India’s Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada in New Delhi on February 14, 2025.
Both sides explored opportunities to enhance trade relations in sectors like pharmaceuticals, pulses, and petroleum products, along with increasing the utilization of the recently launched Rupee-Kyat trade settlement mechanism. India remains Myanmar’s fifth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade amounting to $1.74 billion in 2023-24, slightly lower than $1.76 billion in 2022-23.
The Commerce Ministry highlighted that both leaders acknowledged the need to take concrete steps to facilitate border trade through roads, aiming for mutual economic growth.
