In a recent development, US President Donald Trump made a series of statements about Ukraine that have sparked significant controversy. His remarks, which include claims that Ukraine started the war and that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a “dictator without elections,” align with Russian narratives and contradict established facts.
Trump’s Statements and Their Geopolitical Implications
1. The Claim That Ukraine Started the War
Trump alleged that Ukraine was responsible for initiating the conflict, saying, “You should’ve never started it.” This claim is factually incorrect, as Russia launched a full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, under the pretext of a “special military operation.” The invasion was preceded by Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its support for separatist movements in Eastern Ukraine.
2. Zelenskyy as a ‘Dictator Without Elections’
Trump criticized Zelenskyy for not holding elections, overlooking the fact that Ukrainian law prohibits elections during martial law. Since Russia’s invasion, Ukraine has been under martial law, making it legally impossible to conduct elections.
3. Misrepresentation of Ukraine’s Aid and Approval Ratings
Trump falsely claimed that the US had provided $350 billion in aid to Ukraine, whereas the actual allocated amount stands at approximately $183 billion, with only $86.7 billion disbursed (as per US government data). He also alleged that Zelenskyy had a mere 4% approval rating, whereas independent polls place it at 57%.
4. Misleading Statements on US Treasury Secretary’s Visit
Trump claimed that Zelenskyy refused to meet US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, stating that he was “sleeping.” However, official records, photos, and press briefings confirm that the meeting took place on February 13, 2025.
